The Reef-Farm wintergreen chalice is rather different from other chalices in a couple different ways. For one it is a solid color chalice with the eyes matching the base, but don’t be fooled, there is nothing ordinary about it. The most interesting part of this chalice is the iridescent blue sheen that covers it. The blue iridescence matched with the deep green base is what gives this beauty its wintergreen coloration. When you look into some of the shadowed areas of the chalice you can see the green showing through the blue sheen. A very interesting effect can be had by placing this chalice hanging out from under a ledge allowing part of the coral to be fully lit and part of it to be shaded. You will see the difference the iridescent sheen makes this way.

The other feature of this coral that is quite interesting is it’s growth pattern. Most chalice corals grow with a “drooping plate” form. This means that the coral grows along whatever rock formation is supporting it until it reaches the end of the support and then starts to droop down over the edge like a waterfall. This chalice definitely falls into the other category “grow with the flow”. This means that the coral will reach upward into heavy laminar flow much like a montipora capricornis. As such you will find much more interesting textures on the upward growth portions.
